Operation Beachhead

An idea became a vision; a vision became a mission;
and a mission brought Operation Beachhead to life.

Operation Beachhead welcomed Team Oscar Mike for the third annual summer “storm the surf” event.   The Oscar Mike team arrived on Friday and joined Operation Beachhead in the evening for dinner and dancing, at and sponsored by, the several residents of the Essex & Sussex in Spring Lake, NJ.  As in the past, the visiting team was treated to lodging at homes of the several residents of the Essex & Sussex as well as some local residents in Sea Girt.  Egan’s Liquors in Spring Lake supplied wine and beer for the dinner.  Joann and Bill Ricci donated and created the beautiful floral table centerpieces. Music during the cocktail hour and after dinner was provided by Turnpike Mike.

Operation Beachhead thanks Ginny Duffy Shutner, Rissy Mell, Catherine Lyons, and the residents of the Essex & Sussex for making the evening possible.

Saturday was a perfect beach day and brought everyone together on the beach at Sea Girt, NJ. Joining Team Oscar Mike were Operation Beachhead’s team of adaptive surfers, Donnie, Beth, and Matt along with some new faces.  A large contingent of volunteers was on hand early to help set-up and sign-in  participants and volunteers as they arrived.  Leading up to the weekend, the ocean temperature had been unseasonably cold, dipping down to 56 degrees, however on Saturday, the water temperature warmed up and the participants were able to enjoy the activities.

The large number of surf instructors that came to volunteer enabled lots of activity in the water.  Participants used surfboards, kayaks, boogie boards, and back-supported floats under the watchful eyes of the Sea Girt lifeguards. Andrew Ricci was on hand to help the members create an abstract painting, which as become a staple of each "beach day" event.

After all the beach activity, everyone made their way up the beach to the picnic tables and shared lunch provided by Joseph’s Deli in Spring Lake, NJ. While some members headed home after lunch, others choose to enjoy the rest of the beautiful beach day.

The fun continued into the evening as Operation Beachhead and guests were treated to dinner at Doolan’s Shore Club in Spring Lake Heights.

Sailing was planned for the Sunday, the final day of the weekend. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate, so the we shared breakfast at Mary Dougherty’s home on the beach in Sea Girt. The rest of the day was a leisurely day for the team.

The weekend culminated in one final get together at a dinner sponsored by Edgar’s of Sea Girt.

We all said good-bye to a fun-filled weekend and look forward to the next year when we will get together again.
