Operation Beachhead

An idea became a vision; a vision became a mission;
and a mission brought Operation Beachhead to life.

Oscar Mike Event

The last week in July proved to be a very busy week for Operation Beachhead. The team enjoyed a week of sports and activities starting on Wednesday, July 27 with the last skating event of the summer at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall Township, NJ. The  sled hockey players were assisted by volunteers from St Rose HS in Belmar and Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ, together with Operation Beachhead volunteers. On Friday evening, July 29th,  Operation Beachhead welcomed Team Oscar Mike at a barbecue held at and sponsored by the Atlantic Club in Manasquan, NJ.

Oscar Mike is a team that joins Operation Beachhead each summer for a few days of water sports and social functions. As stated on the Oscar Mike website, "the name, Oscar Mike, comes from military radio jargon used on the front lines. It translates to “On the Move”. To us, “Oscar Mike” means being active, staying positive, and living life to its absolute fullest.”

Several residents of the the Essex and Sussex Condominiums offer their homes to accommodate the team while others from the Oscar Mike Team were guests of a resident in Sea Girt.

Saturday, July 30, Team Oscar Mike and Team Operation Beachhead gathered on the beach in Spring Lake, NJ. Joining with the volunteers of Operation Beachhead were members of the St Rose High School Hockey Team in Belmar, NJ, and Team Red, White and Blue.

While Operation Beachhead team of surfers focus that day was on Team Oscar Mike, they also worked hard to accommodate a small group of regular local participants.  The weather, ocean temperature,  and conditions, cooperated and everyone was able to spend time in the ocean. Throughout the day, Starbucks Coffee in Sea Girt were on hand to offer iced coffee along with flavorings and supplies.  After the morning session, lunch was shared together on the beach with the help of the volunteers who picked up and set the lunch out for everyone. The weather started to turn and that ended the water sport session.

Our day wasn’t over, however.  In the evening both teams met up again at a dinner dance at the Essex and Sussex in Spring Lake NJ. As in years past, the residents of the Essex and Sussx Condominium graciously welcomed both teams and everyone enjoyed dinner and dancing to music performed and  sponsored by Turnpike Mike.

Again on Sunday, members of Oscar Mike were back on the beach for an informal gathering. Some members enjoyed more surfing, while others just enjoyed a day at the Jersey Shore.

Before Oscar Mike departed, there was one final gathering sponsored by Manasquan’s  Reef and Barrel. Both teams were treated to a final farewell dinner to say goodbye until next year in a relaxed atmosphere of food and conversation.

We look forward to them joining us again next year.

This weekend could not have been the success it was without the help of Ginny Duffy-Shutner for giving of her time in making arrangements for the Oscar Mike team, Mary Dougherty, Rissy Mell, Catherine Lyons for offering again to house members of the Oscar Mike Team, and the residence of the Essex and Sussex for making us feel welcomed. Further this weekend could not be possible without the help of the Spring Lake Beach Community and Beach Staff. We thank them and the beach lifeguards, the Spring Lake EMS, Spring Lake Police, Sea Girt Beach staff for transporting the Operation Beachhead beach wheelchairs, all the volunteers, our photography team, and everyone who offered their assistance in making this event a success.

We couldn’t be more grateful for all the support
