Operation Beachhead

An idea became a vision; a vision became a mission;
and a mission brought Operation Beachhead to life.

Operation Beachhead Week ~ June, 2016

Operation Beachhead experienced a very exciting opening to the summer season with two very different events. The first event celebrating Operation Beachhead Day on June 15th was a day of ice hockey at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall Township. The ice hockey outings for the summer are new events for Operation Beachhead. Normally we save our skating for the winter months. Many of the Operation Beachhead team members were there, along with some active duty Coast Guard Troops and several new faces joining in.

The second event on Saturday, June 18th Operation Beachhead traded in their skates and donned wetsuits for the beginning of summer beach events. While we have had many beach events in the past, this event was held for the first time on the beach in Spring Lake.  The CBS News crew, came to visit and interview our members, and documented the day.

Our team of volunteers grows each year and varies with each event. At this event were members of Team Red, White, and Blue, members of the Manasquan Hockey Team, students from local high schools, as well as students visiting for the summer.  The volunteers do many different jobs on a Beachhead day; some collect waivers or ensure that participants and volunteers sign in, some sell shirts and take donations, while others pick up and serve lunch, still others make sure that the participants are taken care of, and finally there are those that come to help set up and break down and move the equipment. The group of experienced surf instructors also continues to grow with more and more of the instructors taking a leading role.

It was so good to see some of the regulars return again. Some brought their families along for a day at the beach. Members from the East Orange Veterans Hospital came to enjoy the beach and beautiful weather.

We thank the town of Spring Lake for making us feel welcomed, and for affording us with some parking spaces to unload our equipment. We thank the Spring Lake lifeguards for keeping a watchful eye on our team throughout the day, and the beach staff for their cooperation.

Our next event will be held in Sea Girt on the Beacon Blvd beach on July 16th.
