Our organization grew out of the desire to provide fun and adventurous beach activities to the most brave and deserving among us - disabled U.S. military veterans. Generally these experiences (which we like to refer to as ‘storming the surf’ - surfing, boogie boarding, and more) are unavailable to the disabled without safe instruction and appropriate life guard presence. But we quickly realized that storming the surf is an invigorating experience for many others. So in addition to disabled vets we also warmly welcome and strongly encourage all active duty troops as well as disabled civilians to come experience storming the surf.
Storming the surf takes place under the instruction of Michael Ricci and Shayne Boyle.
Michael is a combat-decorated Vietnam veteran who sustained permanent injuries while in battle. He holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling and has counseled veterans for over 30 years on issues of substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder. He has also been involved with Disabled American Veterans organizations for many years and has participated in both the winter and Summer Disabled Veterans Sports Clinics several times. Michael has organized informal summer sports outings for both disabled veterans and active-duty troops.
Shayne was introduced to the water's of Sea Girt by surfing parents. Spending Summer days riding whatever whatever wave craft was in vogue: mats, styrofoam boards, fishes, chips and hog's! If it was windy, rigging up the Hobie catamaran and surfing it in the waves was what his family did. Today Shayne is an accomplished professional surfer, having won numerous surfing competitions, and has excelled in surfing instruction for over 15 years. Shayne is also an accomplished artist. You are encouraged to learn more about Shayne and his art works at shayneboyle.com.
Together Michael and Shayne, in partnership with invaluable monitoring by the lifeguards of Sea Girt NJ, accommodate up to 10 people at each event. Such events include surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, boogie boarding and sailing. The events are structured to allow participants from the novice to the highly skilled to enjoy the activities.
